Silent, Holy Night (for Jimmer)

A Lab in a Manger

(Pondering a holy night and thinking about my dear friend, Jimmer, who passed away in a manger of sort just before Christmas .)

Silent, Holy Night  12/24/2014

From vaulted beam of Mountain Life
to outstretched arms and prayers beneath
come promises… new snows delight
Orations drift on Dear and slight

Fermata swell of carols chime
to light the quickened heart divine
as flapping herald wings take flight
keep time among the stars sublime

Here is a sign, a new found Star
come to the sons of men afar,
No harm!
to earth glad tidings rain
the Grace of God is come.

He came!

as if a long lost friend
a child’s fuss,
a baby’s cry
a tender hush,
a whimpery bark from wintery climb

a skinny dog
once known as mine
comes near… his entry is absurd
he’s left behind the dieing year
with all the sadness, all the fears

drops at my feet a slivered branch
bright hope, New Year
he’s circled back

For me, but how? For me but why?
for me…but

in haloed cries…

here am I

He is!

he is
in glow of Christmas, Christmases…
where Eve has hands, holds hands

and paws eternally

without a whimper licks my knee,
I smile at him with empathy,
shed mother’s tears in pondering

this place….this thing?
and what he’s seen,
and what he’s done,
and where he’s been

he’s kissed the face of God…
and seen
most clearly… Mary midnight swaddling
played child’s games
to make the holy child grin

right here he sits. waits happily. pants at my feet.
beyond belief.

my dog.
bows down and drops from teeth
a silver driftwood offering

a twisted cross
I lift it up, press to my heart
no gleam or glitz the silver bark
I grasp the purest gifted art
and sing with rapture this new start

Cupped hands, cupped candles
cupped bread, sweet wine
so from these lips…to Him
I sing
praise Him, my Lord, at Christmas time
and bless His name and those who’ve died

Oh blessed night, oh blessed Son
Oh blessed treasure, Holy one
Here, like ol’Red, do rise again
in circling back … we’re home in Him.

Sleep in Heavenly peace.
